Miscellaneous Design
This section of the website contains projects that were a little hard to define. They came from a variety of sources but they didn’t have categories into which they fit easily. So I just put them into a general miscellaneous section. I may try to categorize them further but for now they’re just ‘miscellaneous’. So there.
Evangeline Leach - Retrospective Prospectus
This prospectus was designed for a retrospective art show for my mother, artist Evangeline Leach. The graphic elements included an announcement for the show and a summary of the works in the exhibition with selected pieces printed in colour. The Fine Art section of this site features most of the work in the show along with notes regarding the availability of original pieces and giclée prints for sale.
Studio Anka Brochure
Anka Csudec's photography, especially her black and white work, is superb so all I had to do was present it in a very simple way. The simplicity is somewhat illusory here, since we used silver ink and four colour printing to maximize the richness of her work. Anka's work with people in general is particularly memorable.
Vision is...
The self promotion card for 2013 was based on a quote from Jonathan Swift (Thoughts On Various Subjects, 1711):
'Vision is the art of seeing things invisible.'
Toronto Classical Singers 2014-15 Brochure
I developed illustrations that represent each of the concerts that the Toronto Classical Singers were doing for this brochure. I particularly liked the competitive skew of the Mozart and Salieri pieces that were being presented at the same concert and did the illustration to reflect the alleged conflict between the two composers. (probably not true but it makes for a good story...)
Grief Counceling Brochure
This brochure was designed for a remarkable woman with a PHD in Social Work who does grief counseling for people that have suffered losses in their lives of one type or another. My client has been blind from birth and when I was asked to work on this project I thought that she would like something that she could enjoy handing out herself so the piece should have a unique tactile component. The solution was to emboss her name and choose a good feeling paper rather than a four colour shiny brochure that she couldn't 'see.'
Music is.... Self Promotion/Holiday card
The yearly holiday card and self promotion that I do has developed over quite a few years and generally elicits an excellent response from family, friends and clients. The card also includes bookmarks that remind clients of my design services whenever they are used throughout the year. This card won a bronze award at the Summit International Design Awards of 2013.
Toronto Classical Singers Brochures
Over the span of a few years, I've been doing yearly artwork for the promotion of this wonderful group of about 100 singers, conducted by Jurgen Petrenko which presents three concerts a year with soloists and with the Talisker Players orchestra accompanying them. Graphic elements from these brochures were also used for e-flyers and magazine ads.
Fall Fiesta Fundraiser
This pro bono project was a collaboration with Rosemary Davies-Janes who was working with Business Depot at the time as their advertising manager. It was a fundraising project for the Markham-Stouffville Hospital featuring a fashion show, a gala dinner and other entertainment. It also won an industry award for printing.
Sword & Stone Band double spread magazine ad
This was a double page spread ad for the Sword & Stone Band, a new rock band that does covers of Bon Jovi tunes. They also like to dress up and each character has a particular symbolic role to play in the band storyline. They clearly have fun! David West of West Photo did the photography and I added the special effects and the forest background. I also designed their logo.
Legacy of Dance Poster-Fantasy Under The Sea
This poster was a combination of digital illustration and of course the required information. It was for a children's dance class yearly event featuring a wide range of dance techniques, a wide range of dance skills and an 'under water' theme.
Legacy of Dance Poster-Circus Poster
This was another poster for the Legacy of Dance Academy. This one featured a Circus Theme for the dances being presented.
Legacy of Dance-Gharibyan Poster
A renowned ethnographer was coming to introduce some of the cultural traditions of Armenia to Canadian audiences and this poster was done to promote his performance.
Staples In-store signage system elements
This in-store signage was created as the back-to-school promotion for all the stores across Canada. At the time they included Staples stores in most provinces, Staples Business Depot in Ontario and Bureau en gros in Quebec so this was a comprehensive country-wide effort. Each sign has a particular function in the store. This is an endcap sign and the smaller ones are so-called bunk signs.
Staples In-Store posters
These posters were also part of the in-store signage system for Staples stores across Canada.
Staples Business Depot Copy centre brochures
I did a lot of retail work for Staples Business Depot before they created their own in-house art department. My collaborator there was Rosemary Davies-Janes who has become a frequent collaborator as a branding expert in subsequent years.
A Sharing Connection-Sara Healy blog banner
Sara Healy, who is a serious blogger, asked me to design a blog banner for her so I came up with this design. She writes a wonderful blog and her thoughtful, yet impish and creative character comes through everything that she does. I highly recommend her blog and really enjoyed working with her on this project.
Vision Quest promo cards
This was a promotion for photographer, Joaquin Compta, who developed a business model which involved combining different clients to do location photography in exotic locations. We did several pieces to promote this concept and these items were direct mail cards that were meant to attract high end clients.
Beyond the Niche - Book cover
Book cover for author Kathryn Hendershot-Hurd. Collaborator on this cover was marketing expert Rosemary Davies-Janes
Fleuresse Promotion package
This was a business startup for an aromatherapist who wanted business cards, a brochure, stationery and gift cards to launch her business.
Promotion for Andy Warhol Chocolates
One of my clients had a short term opportunity to sell exclusive Andy Warhol chocolates licensed by the Andy Warhol Foundation so we designed a direct mail brochure, which included stickers and a translucent envelope that was sent to potential buyers of the rather expensive but unique confection.
Miboso - Radio Host Instruction Program
Book Cover design. Rosemary Davies-Janes, a colleague and frequent collaborator on creative projects authored this book. Her creative input on our collaborative projects is always considerable and appreciated.
The Bradley House Brochure
This brochure was done several years before there was a "Creative Edge Design". It was done for a pioneer museum in Mississauga, called the 'Bradley House', during a time when I was working for the City of Mississauga. I did all the photography and pencil illustrations for this project. The curator working at the Museum wore pioneer clothing and taught children and other visitors how the pioneers lived in their everyday lives. She was also an extremely authentic looking model for this project.
Wedding Invitation
A good friend and copywriter was getting married later on in life and in the process of writing her own wedding invitation compared the two getting married to vintage wine... aging beautifully. The invitations were done in the same spirit...
Miboso - Authentic Personal Branding: Self Study Program
This is another book cover for Rosemary Davies-Janes publication 'Miboso - Authentic Personal Branding: Self Study Program'. The cover illustration was done using Photoshop digital imaging and incorporated appropriate stock photos.
