Dimensional illustration uses sculptural techniques to create an image that is subsequently photographed for the final artwork. Movies such as Tim Burton’s Nightmare before Christmas was realized using animated dimensional illustrations. It is a work intensive technique but the results can be extremely compelling.
Most of my work is done using a mixed media approach including wood, self hardening clay, paper, acrylic and other materials to create the original image. Lighting is also a very important component in the creation of the final photograph.

David as Natural Force
Michelangelo's David reinterpreted as an elemental force of nature...like Merlin.
This piece is a 3 dimensional relief and was used as the cover illustration for a corporate brochure for a holding company that specialized in printing operations.

Home Office
Dimensional Illustration used as magazine cover for a publication by Elizabeth Richardson, Head Office At Home

Robin-Recycling
This dimensional illustration was the cover art for the Ricky McMountain Buyers Guide. I just did the illustration.

'B Movie' Dragon Magazine Cover
This was a cover for the Office Supplies Gold Book and was meant to be a thumb in the nose in the direction of the recession that was occurring at the time. This illustration involved a dragon model and a stage setting with a clever businessman beating the recession by stealing the dragon's tooth.

Sharpening your skills
This was another cover for the Office Supplies Business magazine featuring a dimensional illustration made from a pencil sharpener. The final image was a staged black and white photograph that was hand tinted to add colour.
